October Snow

Mountain Living #3

We had a big snow storm last week that dumped nearly four feet of snow (45 inches) on our mountain--and a lot of other places along Colorado's front range. This is not extremely unusual for Colorado (6' in March of 1990; 4' in October 1997; 8' in March 2003) but it's not exactly welcome this early.

(Click on photos for larger view.)

Cars are buried.

 Camper is buried.

Daughter is buried. Well, almost.

Deck is buried.

Roof is buried.

House is nearly buried.

Thank goodness for husbands!

We've had beautiful weather this week though--it's been sunny and warm and the snow is actually melting quite a bit. You've got to love Colorado!

Glad you had better weather afterwards.

I couldn't take snow like that any more.

I'm just happy it came when we were all well. Shoveling that much snow (or any amount of snow for that matter) when one is ill with the flu would be hellish.

I couldn't handle that much snow!!

Do you ever worry about the deck buckling or is it really really reinforced

love the kid's jacket, she sparkles
and hubby has a lovely grin, I was always partial to his mountain man demeanor ;)

stay well lady
don't fall into a drift
Oy!

She does sparkle! LOL! I don't know if you can tell from the picture or not but those white streaks across her jacket are snowflakes blowing sideways. I had to wear a face mask and goggles just to shovel the deck.

We did get a lot of snow but that's only half what we got a few years ago! I'll have to post photos from that storm sometime.

About the decks. . . a big cornice fell from the roof last winter and broke a few boards on the front deck. But that's an old deck. Our other decks are pretty sturdy. They were even able to bear up under that 8 footer.

By the way, if you don't hear from me for a while, send a Saint Bernard. And don't forget the brandy. ;)

I thought that looked like blowing snow and that your daughter was bundled up quite well - brr, makes me cold just looking at her! And all that snow ... oy! It's way too early for me to be thinking about that but alas, if you're getting this kind of accumulation already, I can only imagine what the winter is going to be like. They're predicting the possibility of snow showers here tonight but I'm hoping they're wrong!

It was cold that day--but it's a "dry" cold. Yeah, right. As if that really makes a difference. Yes, I can only imagine how much snow we'll get this winter. A couple of winters ago we had gotten 17 feet from December to March with a total of about 21 feet for the winter. Unfortunately, that's not so unusual up here. Good thing I like snow. :)

It usually doesn't start snowing seriously in your neck of the woods until after Thanksgiving, though, does it? So hopefully you won't get buried by those "snow showers."

Now that's a lot of snow, and I know snowstorms. LOL But really nothing that compares with what you get on a regular basis. I guess that those folks in Minnesota only think they have it bad. ;) I'm so happy to find your blog. I'm looking forward to catching up on your pictorial adventures. :)

Thanks for stopping by, Cherie! I finally decided to venture into the Blogosphere--and I have to say, I'm really enjoying it! Lots of interesting and friendly people. I enjoy reading about your DC adventures, too, though I understand why you can't post much these days. School can be a real grind. Just ask my daughter. LOL!

I imagine Minnesota winters to be similar to New England winters. Lots of cold and snow, yes, but even more gray and damp. We may get big snowstorms here but then the sun comes out in full force and all is right with the world again. :)

Now in DC you'll get ice storms and they are no fun at all. You think the traffic circles are bad now. LOL!

Hi Lisa! Even though I don't like snow, this is beautiful. You think maybe I could borrow hubby when we get snow here? :o) You have a lovely home. Lisa

Thanks, Lisa! Though you can hardly see the house under all the snow. :) The snow is beautiful, though, and fun when it isn't blowing so hard. And sure, you can borrow my husband. He's a great shoveler. LOL!
