Bull Elk

A Walk on the Wild Side #1

I had to stop for a beautiful bull elk and his girls as they crossed the road in front of me last night. Being the perfect gentleman, he let them cross first (he probably wanted to see whether or not it was safe for him) then, when they were all safely on the other side, he ran full speed to catch up with them tossing his head and kicking up his heels like a playful horse. I imagine he wanted to make sure he didn't lose any of his harem. It is rutting season, after all, when males compete for females (isn't that all the time, though?). You don't often see them running like that; he was magnificent.

It was too dark to get a shot last night but I have this photo of a young bull taken from my deck early one summer morning:

A great picture. Too bad you couldn't catch it that night.

I know! That would have been a rare shot if I'd have caught him kicking up his heels. Ah, well.

That's a great shot, I can just picture this guy or another one like him kicking up his heels and trying to impress the ladies!

Thanks, Linda! And the bull elk do everything they can to impress the ladies, believe me! They would stand on their hands if they could. LOL!

It's nice to know that even in the elk community, chivalry isn't dead. The sad thing is my boss would do the same as this bull elk. Let me go first. If I got hit, he would go the other way. lol.
That is a beautiful photo of the young bull elk. I love his expression. Lisa

Oh but you have the perfect, never-fading mental snapshot. And the fine verbal image you shared with us. Beautiful!

Thanks, Lisa! I liked the expression on his face, too. Sounds like you have an interesting boss. LOL!

Thank you, Hilary! I have many mental snapshots that would make great photos. Too bad I can't load my head with film. :)

Thanks Tymedrifter! He was a beautiful animal. :)

Kilauea Poetry (Regina?): I love The World in Black and White blog. I don't do much B&W work (I never had a darkroom so I didn't see the point) but I have a great appreciation for it. I might start to dabble around with it now, though, since I work exclusively in digital formats these days. You do have some lovely photos on your blog. I love looking at what other photogs are doing. :)

Thanks to both of you for stopping by!

Thanks, Penny! I'm sure he's just giving me a "what is that?" look but I'll take "thoughtful" anyday. LOL! They look like they're having so much fun when they kick up their heels like that, don't they?
